Sajeev John and Jacob Tsimerman – University Professor of physics and professor of mathematics, respectively, in the Faculty of Arts & Science – have been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society, the U.K.'s national academy of sciences.
The world’s oldest independent scientific academy in continuous existence, the Royal Society recognizes individuals who have significantly impacted science through its fellowship program. Fellows are elected based on their substantial contributions to fields including mathematics, engineering science and medical science.
John, a theoretical physicist, is known for his groundbreaking research and fundamental advancements in confining and harnessing the flow of photons of light in a manner analogous to harnessing the flow of electrons. He played a pivotal role in the development of photonic band gap materials, a breakthrough that offered a structured approach to realizing his foundational idea of trapping light in a controlled manner.
Tsimerman, a mathematician, is renowned for his work at the intersection of transcendence theory, analytic number theory and arithmetic geometry. His achievements including proving the André-Oort conjecture through foundational advances in functional transcendence, including a version of the Ax-Schanuel theorem for Hodge structures, and resolving the Griffiths conjecture.
